ACL Surgery Recovery, Weeks 7 to 12: Ladders, Work, What’s Normal
You’re back doing cut lists on light duty. The ladder by the stairwell keeps catching your eye, and your PT keeps measuring your quad.
It’s normal to still be held back: one NHS team says the graft is at its weakest 6 to 12 weeks after surgery. Ladders and loads on uneven ground usually come up at 2 to 3 months, gated by tests like quad strength.
What’s normal now
- Your new ACL graft gets weaker before it gets stronger. One NHS team says it’s weakest 6 to 12 weeks after surgery. Source
- One US hospital protocol wants quad strength over 80% of your other leg to move past weeks 9 to 12. Source
- One NHS team has you working toward a slow treadmill jog by the end of its 6-week-to-3-month stage. Source
- Dates tell you when to ask. Tests help your PT decide when you climb. Source
What usually comes next
- New Zealand’s ACL registry puts carrying loads on uneven ground and climbing ladders at 2 to 3 months, and jogging after 3 months. Source
